How did Mississippi became a state
The Congress divided the Mississippi Territory into the Mississippi and Alabama Territory on 1817. On December 10, 1817, the Mississippi state joined the Union and became the 20th state in the United States. After Georgia's cession (1802) of its Western lands to the United States and the Louisiana Purchase (1803), a land boom swept Mississippi.
